about

From the liner notes:

WVFS is "The Voice of Florida State" or simply V89 - a noncommercial college radio station broadcasting live 24/7/365 via 89.7 FM and wvfs.fsu.edu. WVFS is an affiliated project of the Florida State University Student Government Association and College of Communication and is staffed by approximately 150 hard-working volunteers from both the campus and community. WVFS seeks to provide listeners a diverse source of music and entertainment not readily available elsewhere.

WVFS began broadcasting in September of 1987... Leaving most of the album oriented rock behind in 1990, VFS went with an alternative and diverse programming format and round the clock broadcast. The idea of a multitrack recording studio was born shortly thereafter, and the project was officially launched in 1994. The early 90s proved exciting - with a power upgrade from 270 to 2700 watts that boosted broadcast 20 miles beyond the city, and having the station literally beaten off the air by a crazy guy wielding a metal pipe - not to mention, V89 is also the home of the original Metal Maiden, a.k.a. Pamela Smart, who enticed one of her high school students to murder her husband (you may remember Nicole Kidman's rendition of her in To Die For). After a "Decade of Rawk" and lots of hard work (even asbestos removal by guys in white space suits!), V89 finally began installation of the studio proper in 1997. A long time coming, fall of 2000 marked the studio's completion, and 2001 ignited a new era, as V89 aired its first ever live musical broadcast from the WVFS Studio (featuring trumpeter extraordinaire Longineu Parsons in a live edition of Sunday Evening Jazz). The next few years found both live performances from regional artists and V89's weekly local music show, Hootenanny, making extensive use of the studio. In 2004 things really took off - with live in-studios and recordings at a record pace, including performances by The Raveonettes, Andrew Bird, Lesser Birds of Paradise, Aqueduct, Kid Koala, Mattoid, Built Like Alaska, Bob Log III, The Rosebuds, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Longineu Parsons, just to name a few! All the while, the studio served as a training ground for volunteers, with weekly tutorials and full album production, as well as DIY classes for the greater Tallahassee community under the guidance of Patrick Klem. The next year brought live performances from the likes of Magnolia Electric Company, Four Tet, The Posies, Man Man, Chromatics, and The Joggers. Now it's 2007 and we're celebrating 20 years of amazing music - what better way than with our first, hard-earned, benefit CD?

WVFS is indebted to many whose contributions made the idea of such a recording possible. We extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation...

To those who came before that had the dream of a multitrack recording studio - Chris White, Errol Kolosine, Shelby Bush, Kevin Alexander, Karl the Fixah, Lee "Dr. Blues" Stepina, Daniel Gill, Rich Templin, and the many other 90's V89ers and SGAers who in some way contributed to the birth of the WVFS studio. To those who contributed in some way to the (de- and re-) construction of the studio space - Shelby, (let us not forget) the Asbestos Abatement Team, Andy Hanus, Ryan Carlyle, Euphoria's Alain Rogers, Mike Coleman, Tommy Hamilton, and Patrick Klem. To those who successfully got the live in-studio performances started - Earl Lamacs, Longineu Parsons, Tomatron, and Mike "de Canard" Coleman. To those who had a direct hand in some aspect of making this recording a reality - Andy Hanus, Robert C. Constable Jr., Michael King, Jesse DeWitt, Steve Good, Matt O'Mara, Scott Caigan, Cory Rayborn, BW, Juan Comas, Matt Kimmell, John Brady, Ryan Chupick, Amy Thomas, Nico Wienders, Andrea Troolin, and Larry Littles. To the always dependable constants - Andy Hanus, Ryan Carlile, Rich Templin, Joyce Howard, and our friends at the FSU Student Government Association, and all the dedicated V89 crew that keep VFS rocking like a hurricane! To all the amazing bands that support our station and who played for us the recordings we share with you on this CD - we are grateful. To one whose fingerprints are all over this recording from start to finished product - Patrick "P Klem" Klem - whose time, energy, persistence, and massive contributions on every level are what made this CD a reality. And finally, to all of the loyal listeners and longtime supporters of WVFS Tallahassee, we couldn't do this without you. Enjoy!
